In this 2000 word assignment, you will demonstrate your understanding of the various ‘sides’ to this debate, as well as the historical contexts from which these perspectives emerge.

TOPIC: Those who view consumption negatively argue that consumption makes people alienated, passive, and unable to think imaginatively. Those who view consumption more positively argue that consumption allows people to be active, self-constructing members of specific identity groups. Using a specific example (or examples) compare and contrast key arguments on both sides of this debate, paying particular attention to the ways in which each side of the debate characterises the consumer. Your essay must demonstrate your understanding of the historical contexts from which these two attitudes emerge.
