Some General Guidelines on Writing a Reading Journal:
I want to know what/how you responded to a reading or what you think about that reading. Therefore, there isn’t a “set” or “particular” or even “correct” way to write these journals. However, that doesn’t mean that you should turn in 2 pages of rambling thought, either. For a successful, critical, and thought-provoking reading journal, follow these general rules:
• Before writing the journal, think about the reading holistically. What was the main point of the reading? Do you agree/disagree? Why? What challenged you in this reading? Why? What questions do you still have? How effective was the reading?
• Focus your response. Pick one or two of your ideas and use those as the primary structure of the response.
• Be organized. Structure your response. Provide an overall theme/idea to your response. Connect thoughts and paragraphs together.
• Be specific. Don’t write generally about the reading. Write about specific passages or quotes. Base your responses in the reading itself. Actually quote the material in the response.
• Explain yourself. Don’t just provide your response, tell me why you responded that way.
