Solids & Liquids

Order Description

Planning a Mini Science and Technology Unit of Work
Purpose:
This assessment is designed to have you plan a unit of work in primary science and technology to teach to a class in a specified year of schooling.
The scenario
Your new Principal has asked you to apply all of your recently acquired university knowledge to plan a sequence of SIX LEARNING EXPERIENCES including activities or tasks, which align with the NSW K-6 science and technology syllabus content and outcomes for a class. A learning sequence may cover several lessons.
The class is a complex one for programming because it contains students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds: there are 10 girls and 20 boys, 4 students need support to remain on task, and 3 students are particularly bright and feel that they never get to do anything that makes them think.
The chosen activities within the lessons must:
1. relate to a named THEME or TOPIC associated with science and technology content knowledge in the NSW K- 6 Science and Technology syllabus,
2. assessment indicators must produce EVIDENCE of student achievement
3. include ALL parts of the concepts in the strands of working scientifically AND working technologically,
4. directly relate to something of importance happening in the students world,
5. be hands-on AND minds-on,
6. be of interest to the students,
7. include perspectives such as: inclusiveness (gender, culture), environmental and history of science
that fit with your theme,
8. suit the learning needs of all class participants,
9. culminate in an end product (the sixth task/experience) where a group of students presents their findings/model to their peers.

Your unit of work will be evaluated by how well you justify and provide evidence from curriculum documents and the research literature for the sequencing and content of your six lessons. You are expected to provide references in APA style to support your work.
You need to think about how to best sequence activities for optimal learning and engagement and how you will determine student learning (what your assessment items will be).
Carefully read the Assessment 1: Unit of Work marking sheet in Appendix 1 noting what is being looked for in your sequence of lessons.
