introductory statistics,
the trial of a criminal case to explain the logic behind hypothesis testing. In the justice system, a person is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty. And the guilt is established on the basis that the evidence is beyond a reasonable doubt. In hypothesis testing, the null hypothesis is presumed to be true until it is rejected. The rejection is based on the observation that the data are highly likely to differ from the null hypothesis.
For this week’s discussion, do the following using the example above:
• Compare the statistical concept I was trying to teach with the scenario of a criminal trial. List the corresponding (similar) elements between the two and the differences between the two. What is the central logic that is common to both, that I was trying to convey?
• Discuss how analogies work (or do not work) in educational settings. Support your arguments with at least one scholarly reference other than the textbook. Generate one example where analogical reasoning would work in the classroom.
