1. One of the major duties of managers is to control expenses. Since labor costs in health care is often 60% or more of total operating costs, discuss management’s role in controlling labor costs, including the use of part-time staff, control of over-time, outsourcing and other methods.
2. Many health care organizations determine their optimum compensation and benefit levels by “benchmarking” against similar organizations. Discuss benchmarking and how it helps establish equitable compensation and benefits.
3. Identify and discuss at least five measures health care organizations can implement to reduce workplace violence.
4. Health care organizations are constantly experiencing change due to competition, regulation and other outside forces. Identify three potential changes in the near future which may affect human resources and discuss how health care organizations may develop strategies for implementing change related to human resources.
5. Disaster Planning and Emergency Preparedness are major issues for hospitals and other health care organizations. Discuss the role HR should play in preparing for large-scale emergencies impacting the facility as well as the larger community.
6. Years ago many companies, including health care organizations, offered traditional retirement plans. Most of these plans have been discontinued due to economic reasons. Please identify and discuss various retirement plan options which are common in the health care industry today.
7. While the text addresses the various phases of the collective bargaining process, what is your opinion regarding unionization of healthcare employees? Please briefly discuss the pros and cons of unionization in health care.
