This case shows how rich crowdsourcing can be as a source of ideas. Companies do not have all the ideas they need inside the organization. Open innovation creates ways for new sources of ideas that might not be within the company. These ideas are meant to help in the process of satisfying the customers’ needs and demands. Thus, what a better source of ideas to satisfy customers demand than the customers themselves? That is the power of crowdsourcing. Fiat came up with the idea of engaging customers in the design and creation of a car called Fiat Mio, an Italian phrase that translates “My Fiat” in English language. This means that this car prototype belonged to the “customers”, which at the same time, were the designers since their ideas helped create the vehicle. This was a very innovative idea in the automobileindustry. Although it was not totally innovative (it had been used in the IT industry by companies like Wikipedia and Google), when Fiat implemented it, it was the first time used in the automobile industry.
