Evaluating User Interfaces Academic Essay

COMP106 Assignment 1
Evaluating User Interfaces
The tasks in this assignment concern the evaluation of user interfaces. The purpose of this assignment
is for you to demonstrate your critiquing ability in evaluating interactive systems.
The whole assignment counts for 7% of your mark for COMP106.
Assignment
Choose two websites (or software) from any of the four categories below – one that you think has a
good design, and one which you do not think has a good design.
Categories:
1. Travel company website (e.g. train, hotel, airline)
2. Any sort of social networking website (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
3. Media company (e.g. newspaper, TV)
4. Any software that is installed on the Lab computers
Part 1
Choose 6 rules for good design from the lecture notes that you think are important.
Here, a rule is a single statement which says something concrete about how to make a good
design (e.g., ‘Strive for consistency’). They may be called rules, principles, standards, guidelines,
heuristics, and so on. You can find some in the ‘Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design’ discussed
in Lecture 6; guidelines for various users discussed in Lecture 2; you could also apply Nielsen’s
Heuristics presented in Lecture 4.
Evaluate and compare the two websites (or software) that you have chosen, with respect to your
chosen rules or guidelines.
For each rule you have chosen include the following:
• Clearly state which rule you are referring to.
• For each website, state how well you think the website satisfies this rule and explain why.
Use 2 or 3 examples from the website to justify your opinion.
• State how well you think each of the websites satisfies this guideline and explain why.
Clearly state which one you think better satisfies the rule.
Part 2
Give a brief overall comparison of the two websites (2 or 3 paragraphs), referring to whatever design
features you personally think are most important (they do not need to be any rules you have seen in
lectures – whatever is important to you).
Briefly compare whether the overall result is the same, or different, to the result for the majority of
the guidelines in part 1 (e.g. “Site 1 has a better overall design for … reasons, and also better satisfied 5
of the 6 guidelines chosen”).
Include screenshots if you think it will help, but this isn’t required.
