Writing a Biography of an Indigenous person Academic Essay

Title: Assignment 1 is a Narrative/storying (flexible presentation format) Story Board

Value: 30 %

Length: very approximately 1000-1500 words

Due Date Monday Week 4

This assignment is an opportunity for you to tell an Indigenous individual’s health story (on a specific Indigenous health topic) and it can either be from a personal or professional perspective.

You can choose the medium or way of telling this story and these can include: writing down someone’s story, recorded oral presentationor poster/picture/collage with an accompanying written document.

The main requirement of the assignment is to do a ‘biography’ of an Indigenous person or an autobiography (if you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person yourself) as a ‘representative’ or ‘personalisation’ of a specific Indigenous health topic. This is about putting the ‘face to the facts’ as it were and telling the stories that come with the statistics.

There are two options for doing this:

1. You can choose an Indigenous person that you are involved with either as a client or a worker in an Indigenous health setting, or through connections with family members or friends. You then talk with them and tell their story and tie it in with some background or an overview of the Indigenous health issue. Of course you can only do this with the client’s permission.

You will need to ask yourself questions like:

How might have this health condition impacted on the person, their family, their community and perhaps the wider community.

The assignment will only be viewed by yourself and the marker.

  1. 2. If you don’t work in the Indigenous health area or personally know any Indigenous people that you could relate to for this assignment; you could look into the lives of some well-known Indigenous Australians who have battled some kind of health issue. This information is in the public domain.

You will need to ask yourself questions like:

How might have this health condition impacted on the person, their family, their community and perhaps the wider community.

It is recommended that you read and search widely.
