Using data tables from the American Community Survey (as displayed in Social Explorer), discuss and describe empirical data regarding a social problem of your choice.
Step 1Choose one of the following Social Problems:
• Wealth and Poverty
Step 2Provide a 1-2 page literature review of the social problem you picked in Step 1 making use of at least 2 peer-reviewed articles (you may use articles from the Annotated Bibliography Wiki) as well as the information provided in the textbook (Kendall Ch 2). Your review should draw on the reading materials by using in-text citations. For your citations you must use ASA style. Your review should address the following issues:• A definition of the social problem• A description of the population(s) that may be affected by the social problem• A description of the contributing or underlying issues of the social problem
Step 3Access the 2010-2014 5-year estimates of the American Community Survey Data through Social Explorer. Pick a state of your choice and, using the power point slides provided, find two data tables that directly address the social problem and its contributing factors as discussed in Step 2. Copy the tables to your essay (make sure to reference the table’s source using ASA style).
Step 4Provide detailed description of the tables you picked in Step 3. What do they display? Describe the tables and statistics in a way that somebody who has not seen them would have all important information.
Step 5Evaluate the information provided in the tables in relation to the social problem you discussed in step 2 and interpret the tables in a way that is sociologically meaningful. Do the tables confirm or reject the information discussed in step 2? Do the tables display any surprising or intriguing results? How can these results be explained from a sociological perspective?
