H does it change from tragi-comedy to conform to religious expectations of Shakespeare’s England to denounce “magic” (the evil arts) and end in a romantic comedy? • Compare, using textual evidence, Shakespeare’s construction of Caliban as other, as a New World quasi-human being against the self of Europeans, who are colonizers and established Old World citizen. Cite specific passages from The Tempest to make your case. Explain how Shakespeare manipulates the New World person to embody all the negative traits. Then, compare Shakespeare’s other to Montaigne’s definition of the other. (Cue: read very carefully and you will recognize Shakespeare’s other is Montaigne’s self).  It is useful to first use Montaigne’s own words about how New World inhabitants should be perceived and how the characteristics Shakespeare uses to describe them are better suited to Montaigne’s Old World citizens.
