1. Thinking about civilization through time, consider an element of culture, language, economics, governance, art, music, literature, or other hallmarks of civilizations, and think about how we use it today or how it still influences our lives, or your life, right now. Your work should provide possible reasons for the longevity of this element of civilized life.

Alternatively, you could consider an element from the past that may have been an important element of civilization but is not in use today. Your work should provide possible reasons for the demise of this element of civilized life.

In short, we want to think about the evolution of ideas and practices that are a part, or have been a part, of civilization, and we want to contemplate what’s durable and what’s not.

2. This rubric will account for characteristics in the following three areas:

• Basic writing: sentence structure, grammar, spelling, word choice, punctuation
• Style and form: cite sources, works cited, quality of sources, MLA formatting
• Critical thinking: synthesis of ideas from the research, quality of reasoning, free of plagiarism.

3. Generally, research papers (especially formal MLA or APA papers) should not be written in first-person. This paper should not be written in first- or second-person. This means that you should not use the words “I,” “me,” “you,” “we,” “us,” or other such variations.

The paper should be a minimum of 750 words and shouldn’t exceed this limit by more than about 10%, not including your works cited page.
