Summary:
The goal of counterintelligence is to prevent, deter, defeat, or manipulate an adversary from conducting intelligence operations on you or those you protect. Discuss
how each of the three categories of counterintelligence (collective counterintelligence, defensive counterintelligence, offensive counterintelligence) can be used
strategically by governments and corporations to protect against cyber espionage, sabotage, cyberwarfare or cyberterrorism (please choose only one or two of these
types of cybercrime as the focus of your essay, this will help you to develop depth). Provide examples and case studies to support your arguments. This research essay
is worth 50% of the total mark and should be completed by all students.
Notes:
You must ensure that the arguments set out in your essay are based on analysis and assessment and not only description/personal opinion. Opinions must be backed up
with correctly referenced peer-reviewed evidence and sources. As this is a research essay, you will be required to do in-depth reading to form your arguments and
provide supporting evidence for these. Aim to include 2 or 3 references in each paragraph in the body of your essay. Please note: blogs, Internet opinion pieces and
Wikipedia articles are not classed as acceptable referencing materials. Direct quotes should be used sparingly and should not fill up the essay. Aim to start the
research essay early in the semester to ensure that you can put in the required level or effort and research.
Essay length should be 3,000 words plus or minus 10%. Word count INCLUDES footnotes but does not include title page(s), cover page(s), or bibliography. Font size
should be 12 point with 1.5 line spacing. 5% of the available mark will be deducted for every 300 words under/over the word count limit.
The criteria used to assess the major essay (marking template) is posted on iLearn. Marking criteria in the marking template includes evaluation of topic
comprehension, argument, written expression, referencing, essay structure and organisation. Please ensure that you use the rubric at various points when writing your
essay. This will help to ensure that you achieve the best results.
Marks will be available to students within three weeks of submission at the latest.
