– You work in the retail industry as an internal communications officer. The executive management team has recently introduced a new national online system for
requesting and receiving notifications about rostered shifts via a smartphone app. There have been complaints by staff about the new roster system and you have been
asked to produce a proposal to review the new system.
What research do you need to conduct, and who should it involve?

Think about: Defining the communication problem or issue. The research aim, objectives, method/s to be used, how data will be collected and analysed and a discussion
about the various implications of the research, before offering some next step recommendations. What tone should you adopt? Who is the report addressed to? What is the
context and what are the various employee characteristics, particularly in regard to their communication needs?

You will need to design a research instrument to collect data, and to identify the sample/s from whom the data will be collected. You also need to consider what
ethical issues could arise from this research and how these will be addressed.

N.B. This scenario requires a research project proposal, rather than a report of findings e.g. how you intend to undertake the research if the project is approved by
the executive management team. Imagine that you are presenting a proposal to justify the time and effort required to do the research and obtain the information.
