Lisa is an 11-year-old in her final year of primary school. Until recently she had been excelling at school, with A
grades in her academic subjects and the occasional B+ in non-academic subjects (which she and her family do
not value). However, lately she has been having meltdowns when prompted by her mother to do her
homework and, when her teacher greets her with requests to see last night’s work, she becomes surly and will
back-chat the teacher. She has been kept in at recess a few times to complete her assigned work and in
response to her belligerence towards her teacher, and has been called to the Principal’s office to discuss her
declining behaviour and grades.
Lisa’s parents (Natalie and Mark) are both doctors. They have been married for 17 years. They work
unpredictable shifts at public hospitals, including evenings and weekends but they ensure that there is always
one parent home for Lisa, an only child.
Three evenings after school, Lisa plays netball; she plays in the school orchestra on a fourth weeknight; and she
has a piano lesson on Saturday mornings. She has some close school friends, some of who will be moving to the
same high school as her next year, but her closest friend, Samantha, will be moving elsewhere.
Lisa reports that she wants her mother and teacher to ‘get off her back’ about her school work. She thinks they
don’t trust her and declares that she only matters to them if she gets high grades and makes them look good
