1. Based on an application that you know about or can find out about describe in your own words how that application is hosted. Some questions whose answers you might want to include in your
paper include: How many servers does the application run on? Is it accessible from the internet? who supports the application? Approximately how many people have the support of the application
as their primary job?
2. Mobile communication systems are different from wired systems in that they have highly visible towers that connect users to the network backbone. As you drive around Dubai it is easy to
see the cellular towers standing up out of the desert. Distance is not the only determinant of how close together the towers are. In densely populated urban areas the towers can be quite close
together so that they can allocate enough frequency ranges to handle the number of users that need to access them. Based on a road or area that you know well record how many and how far apart the
towers are (you can take pictures if you would like) and what that implies about both the strength of the signals generated by the handheld sets and the density of users anticipated in the region.
3. Many of the sensors that might be used in a city science application are located in areas where it is very difficult to run permanent wires to the sensor. what are the capabilities that
make a wireless solution useful in this situation, and what are the limitations that make wireless solution problematic for sensors and sensor networks?
4. Two of the most popular routing protocols are the Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). While these are both routing protocols they are used in very
different situations. Compare and contrast RIP and BGP as they might be used in a city science application deployment scenario.
5. City science depends very heavily on the use of ICT to both involve and inform the public about new initiatives. There is a central problem with this in that users want to have their
information broadly accessible, but at the same time private. Information assurance is a key component in this regard. Describe three information assurance initiatives that you consider important
to have in place prior to the deployment of information sensitive city science initiatives.
6. The networks that support city science initiatives were not designed with the environmental issues typical to a city science environment in mind. What are some of the key challenges that
need to be addressed to enable computer networks to better support a city science application workload, and how do you feel this change will be accomplished?
