Select a specific DSM-5 diagnosis that you have NOT previously researched and conduct a literature search for five (5) articles pertaining to their treatment (you may
choose the same diagnosis for this and your Signature Assignment). These five (5) articles must have been published within the past six years and specifically include
systemic treatments.

In this section of the essay, you will present a summary of your article findings pertaining to systemic treatment of your specific diagnosis. Please note this should
be an integrated summary of the five (5) articles, not five paragraphs about each treatment separately. This summary should include the following information:

Identification and brief description of your chosen disorder.
Information about the current systemic treatments. The following information should be addressed: theoretical foundation of treatment, specific interventions
(individual and family), length of sessions and treatment, format (group, family, mix of individual and family, etc.) goals of treatment, and outcomes of the
treatment.
Your recommendation for treatment of your specific disorder. Your recommendation should be supported by information from your five (5) articles.
Section 2: Examine Psychoeducation

For this topic and section of your essay, read each of the following:

MacFarlane, M. M. (2003, May/June). Clinical update: Borderline personality disorder [PDF document].
Simoneau, T., & Miklowitz, D. (2001): A book chapter about psychoeducation for bipolar disorder.
Once you have completed the assigned readings, write Section 2 of your essay, and then discuss the following:

The usefulness of psychoeducational approaches to chronic and severe mental illness.
The articles’ focus on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Determine which principles can be taken from these articles and used in psychoeducational treatment of other
types of disorders or presenting problems.
The effectiveness of these psychoeducational treatments.
Section 3: Discuss Family Therapy Treatments

For this topic and final section of your essay, review the AAMFT clinical updates about chronic and severe mental illness that you read throughout the course.

mental illness using family therapy (see the Books and Resources links for this week):

applied to working with a broad range of disorders and presenting problems. In essence, discuss the following question: “What is it about family therapy that is useful
in working with clients that are commonly diagnosed with severe and chronic mental disorders?” Be sure to reference specific clinical updates that support your
identified principles.
