a formal bibliography that includes citations of sources with summary and
evaluation information for each source. The assignment should be typed and double
spaced. Each student will pick a topic that will need to be approved by the instructor. You
may use your text to help you narrow your ideas and begin to find resources. A minimum
of seven sources should be used. All sources need to be reliable academic sources, such as
scholarly articles, books, films, etc. You will need to use APA formatting throughout the
paper. Your bibliography will be graded using the rubric included. The emphasis is on
finding accurate, reliable sources and providing a clear summary and evaluation for each
source.
assignment is designed to help you evaluate sources of information in the social
sciences as you learn about a specific topic in urban sociology. An annotated bibliography
includes all of the citation information needed to find a source and a paragraph describing
the source.
1. Find a minimum of seven sources on your topic – these should be your best sources
so that means you will likely have reviewed at least twice this many
2. For the seven – you will need to pick reliable scholarly sources (peer reviewed
articles, books, videos, interviews, etc.) and your textbook cannot be a source.
a. At least 5 of your sources need to be from peer-reviewed journals.
b. No more than one of your sources can be from a newspaper or magazine.
c. WIKIPEDIA and encyclopedias are not acceptable sources.
d. If you are unsure about your source, please email the TA or professor.
3. Use APA citation format
4. As you write your annotated paragraph include both a summary of the source, an
evaluation of the validity of the source and its usefulness. Paragraphs should be in
full sentences 150-200 words long. Length of the entry is often linked with the
length of the source.
a. Summarize the content of the source – be descriptive and specific
b. Evaluate the accuracy and validity of the source
c. Describe the usefulness of the source
5. The format should list the citation, then the appropriate paragraph annotation
followed by the next citation and annotation. All entries should be typed and double
spaced.
6. Do not just rely on the abstract, you will not get enough information or do well on
this assignment if you only read the abstracts. You need to read the articles to
critically evaluate them.
Identifying valid sources:
? Look for the author’s credentials. Are they a person who has a documented
knowledge of science?
SOCI 3000 Fall 2017
? When was the source created? Could research since that time have changed the
information included in your source? If so, look for more recent works that give
you the same (or different) information.
? What type of source is this – popular, journal, web?
? The depth and level of detail offered in the source. It should be appropriate to
your level of understanding but use relevant vocabulary and cite research to
support its information.

Battle, K. (2007). Child poverty: The evolution and impact of child benefits. In Covell, K., &
Howe, R. B. (Eds), A question of commitment: Children’s rights in Canada (pp. 21-44).
Waterloo, ON: Wilfrid Laurier University Press.

Ken Battle draws on his research as an extensively-published policy analyst, and a close
study of some government documents, to explain child benefits in Canada. He outlines some
fundamental assumptions supporting the belief that all society members should contribute to the
upbringing of children. His comparison of Canadian child poverty rates to those in other
countries provides a useful wake-up to anyone assuming Canadian society is doing a good job of
protecting children from want. He pays particular attention to the National Child Benefit (NCB),
arguing that it did not deserve the criticism it received from politicians and journalists. He
outlines the NCB’s development, costs, and benefits, including its dollar contribution to a typical
recipient’s income. He laments that the Conservative government scaled back the program in
favor of the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB), and clearly explains why it is
inferior. However, Battle relies too heavily on his own work; he is the sole or primary author of
almost half the sources in his bibliography. He could make this work stronger by drawing from
the perspectives of others’ analyses. However, Battle does offer a valuable source for this essay,
because the chapter provides a concise overview of government-funded assistance currently

available to parents. This offers context for analyzing the scope and financial reality of child
poverty in Canada.
Kerr, D., & Beaujot, R. (2003). Child poverty and family structure in Canada, 1981-
1997. Journal of Comparative Family Studies, 34(3), 321-335.
Sociology professors Kerr and Beaujot analyze the demographics of impoverished
families. Drawing on data from Canada’s annual Survey of Consumer Finances, the authors
consider whether each family had one or two parents, the age of single parents, and the number
of children in each household. They analyze child poverty rates in light of these demographic
factors, as well as larger
