Cultural Aspects of Time and Ageing,”
anthropologist Cecil Helman (2005) (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. identifies how time in the Western world is frequently perceived as “a form
of currency or commodity, which can be ‘spent,’ ‘wasted,’ ‘saved,’ or ‘given’ [and that…] it can be ‘free,’ ‘spare,’ ‘extra,’ or ‘overtime’” (p. S54). In this sense,
time becomes intertwined with our notions of work, leisure, and productivity and can be a referent for a broad array of emotions as diverse and far ranging as prideful
accomplishment to a shameful sense of “wasting” time. Helman also notes that in Western societies most people “live at the intersection of several different forms of
cultural time” (p. S55), and he lists these forms as:• Clock time: “the 24-hour cycle…regulated by clocks”;• Developmental time: “the linear model of human development…imposed on the life path of children and adolescents….that indicates the timing of children’s
developmental milestones”;• Calendrical time: “the division of the year, based upon the natural world…into days, weeks, and months”;• National time: which is “specific to an individual nation state, and includes its annual public holidays and celebrations;• Religious time: which is “linked to the weekly cycles of Sabbaths and workdays as well as to the annual feasts, fasts, and festivals” associated with religious
observance;• Bureaucratic time: “the time cycle of workplaces and educational institutions”;• Social relationship time: “the specific events of an individual’s personal social network…[such as] birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, or memorial days”; and• Symbolic rebirths: these times “can occur after major points of transition or crises in the life cycle” such as major illnesses, giving birth, or divorce.
(Quoted material: Helman 2 005, pp. S55-56)In the Time chapter in our textbook, the authors provide numerous examples of how various contemporary artists explore time in their work. For this assignment, you
will write an “expository” essay. In expository writing, a writer concentrates on 1) researching an idea to collect evidence, 2) evaluating the evidence she/he
collects, and 3) then presenting a discussion about the idea he/she investigated in a clear and concise manner. Expository essays often draw upon comparison and
contrast, discussion of definitions of terms or concepts, and presentation of exemplars that emphasize or support the writer’s points. In your essay, you are
encouraged to use these different mechanisms in the development of your essay.Assignment Guidelines:For this assignment, you are required to• Select one form of “cultural time” discussed by Helman and discuss it in relationship to the work of two artists discussed in Chapter 4: Time in the course
textbook. For a complete discussion of the forms of cultural time listed above, it will help you immensely to read Helman’s article “Cultural Aspects of Time and
Ageing (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.” (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1369268/) so that you better understand the context in
which he identifies and discusses the types of “cultural time” listed above. In keeping with the course focus, the works of art you select to write about must be ones
that were created after 1980.• Focus your essay discussion on explaining how each artist you discuss explores your selected form of “cultural time” in his/her work.• Select example works by each artist and embed images of those works within your essay or provide working URLs where the works may be viewed online. Be sure to
select works that relate to the form of cultural time on which your essay is focused.• Properly cite all sources of supporting information in both in-text citations and a bibliography appended to your discussion.Technical Requirements:• Your response to this assignment must be a minimum 600 and a maximum of 750 words in length (not including bibliography)• Your response must be conceptually polished and fully edited when submitted as a finished product.• Your response must be submitted to its assigned CANVAS dropbox by the due date and time assigned for this assignment.• All research sources used must be fully and accurately documented using the citation standards of one of the following: American Psychological Association
(APA), Modern Language Association (MLA), or the Chicago Manual of Style.• Your response must be formatted in a readable typeface (e. g., Arial or Helvetica) and saved as either a RTF (rich text format) or a DOC/DOCX (Microsoft word)
file. No other file formats will be accepted for evaluation.• When submitting your response to the CANVAS dropbox, please identify the submitted file in the following manner “yourlastname. xxx. For example, a Microsoft
Word file submitted by “Riley Smith” would be labeled “smith.doc”. It may also be helpful for your records if you insert a number after your name to correspond with
the exercise number. For example, consider labeling your files in the following manner, using Riley Smith’s last name as an example: “smith1.doc” for Module Exercise
1, “smith2.doc” for Module Exercise 2, etc.Successful participation in this module exercise will demonstrate the student’s ability to:• Identify and analyze issues and problems relating to contemporary art, artists, and the institutional frameworks in which art is experienced; and• Define, apply, and convey his / her understandings of and opinions about contemporary art in discipline-specific written conventions.Late submission of assignments: Papers or projects submitted late (i. e., past their due date and time) are subject to a 20% penalty for every 24 hours or portion
thereof that they are submitted late, including weekends and holidays. After three days, no late submissions of any project will be accepted unless extremely unusual
circumstances warrant an exception and the student (or his/her authorized agent) has conferred with the instructor. Examples of such exceptions would include a
student’s hospitalization or a death in a student’s immediate family (father, mother, sibling, or grandparent).Evaluation CriteriaYou may review the Evaluation Rubric for this assignment here. Please note that this assignment will be submitted by the instructor for review to Turnitin.com for
