According to Durkheim, there are two crucial elements in understanding crime, which at first sight appear to be slightly contradictory. In Durkheims analogy, he argues that a limited amount of crime is necessary and beneficial to society, so much so that society could not exist without some form of deviance. On the other hand, he argues that too much crime is bad for society and can help bring about its collapse. Thus Durkheim is suggesting that crime is not only inevitable but also functional. It only becomes dysfunctional when its rate is unusually high or low.
