Cost-benefit analysis (also called benefit-cost analysis) has wide application as a method for evaluating public policy. A few of the real-world applications I have seen in the past few years include: highway construction projects,public transportation services, publicly provided health services, safety regulations, public subsidies for sports stadiums, taxation of alcohol, cigarette consumption, agricultural research, the restoration of old buildings, the returns to higher education, the use of speed cameras to control traffic, the choice between different energy sources (wind, solar, nuclear, coal, ethanol), and fishing restrictions on rivers. (Note that cost-benefit analysis focuses on public policy analysis, not how to make money.)
