Instructions for writing the annotated bibliography, essay proposal
Academic writing is a multi-sequenced process. It usually starts out by defining a research question, reading the relevant literature, formulating a thesis,
elaborating an outline of the final work, and sketching a first draft. You should see the essay proposal assignment as the outline. The other phases of academic
writing involve submitting your work to others to comment on it, reflecting upon this feedback, reading more literature and re-writing the paper. You are expected to
do these activities before delivering the final paper. Your teaching assistant will provide you with feedback on your essay proposal. Please use those comments to
improve the final product. Therefore, you should take the assignments for this course as a way to hone your academic writing skills.
Annotated bibliography and Essay proposal
As mentioned before, your first assignment will be to write the essay proposal. It requires the reading of the relevant literature the elaboration of a clearly-stated
thesis and the writing up of an outline of the final paper.
As mentioned above, the annotated bibliography is a summary of an article, book chapter or book, and typically contains: a) a description of the author’s research
question and/or hypotheses; b) the methodology employed in the author’s work; c) the main conclusions of the piece; and most importantly, d) how it will be utilized in
the final paper. You will write the annotated bibliography of five academic sources (250 words maximum per source) in order to familiarize yourself with the key
debates around one specific issue, which will allow you to better ground your research question in the existing literature on the topic you elect to study. Thus, you
will have to conclude the annotated bibliography before writing the essay proposal, or the outline. It is highly recommended that you discuss the appropriateness of
your sources to your essay topic with your TA before writing your final essay proposal.
An outline is a breakdown of the work into different sections that are interconnected, sequenced and in which each unit builds upon the previous one. Each section
should introduce an additional part of your argument (for the sake of clarity, it is useful to title the sections with their main idea). The outline must have an
introduction, in which you state the thesis/main argument and describe the remaining sections of the paper, and a final section (“Conclusions”, “Final Considerations”,
“Final Thoughts”) in which you summarize what you have written about and your contributions to the debate. In between these two sections, you can use as many units as
you deem necessary to clearly develop your line of reasoning.
To use an analogy, think of the outline as a skeleton. The bones are the key arguments – the basic structure of the final paper. Its clarity is of utmost importance to
a successful essay proposal and paper. Design the skeleton carefully so that, as a whole, it forms the basis for a cogent analysis.
The essay proposal, however, should not be seen as a collection of briefly titled sections with bullet-point ideas. For each section, write two or three paragraphs
that clearly spell out that unit’s content. The essay proposal must have a maximum of three double-spaced pages (12 point Times New Roman font). As the main goal of
this first exercise is to give you the opportunity to receive feedback and use it in order to attain an excellent grade in your final paper, it is in your best
interest to make it as complete and clear as possible.
