that African Americans “created themselves?‘

Culture: What does it mean to say that African American culture, including the religion,
is inherently political?

Slavery: What was distinctive about the way slavery was implemented in the United
States? Why is it important to understand and be able to explain) that distinction?

The Black Image: What are some specific misconceptions that have been perpetuated
about African Americans through mainstream American culture (and even exported
around the world)?

For each of the questions above, please provide specific examples of people, laws,
cultural beliefs and practices, etc. that we have covered since the beginning of the
class- Use your lecture notes and review your reading to find these specific examples.
