Reflective paper
Order Description
This assignment will require students to compose and post reflections to a class forum on
cuLearn. Three times over the course of the semester, students will be asked to write a
reflection on a media representation of their choosing, whether podcast, documentary, image,
song, poem, short fiction, blog post, popular publication or piece of art that relates to human
sexuality, and place it within historical context. Students will be asked to think about the
time period and geographical/ cultural location of where and when this representation
originated, how it compares to or is informed by past conceptions about sexuality, and how it
may parallel with the central themes of the course. Students will then be required to compose
a 350-600 word reflection that draws upon the theories and concepts discussed in class and in
the readings. Further instructions, as well as an example reflection, will be posted to cuLearn
for you to review. This assignment will develop analytical and communication skills, as well
as help students gain an historical perspective of sexual expression and identity.
In completing this assignment, you will be able to:
1) Identify an appropriate piece of media related to human sexuality;
2) Analyse the chosen piece of media in light of the themes and theories of the course;
3) Write a reflection that captures your analysis on the CU forum “Media Reflections”.
Each completed assignment will include:
1) A hyperlink and/or screen shot of the student’s chosen piece of media;
2) A 350-600 word reflection on the piece of media by the student that incorporates the
themes and theories discussed in class and in the readings.
im also attaching an email from my professor concerning this essay
Yes, my expectations are the same, however, there did seem to be some confusion last time, so it would be ideal to review the assignment together once more.
To begin, I would look over the example reflection I provided, as well as some of the other reflections that were posted to the online forum for the first reflection. Ellen Case’s reflection on The Well of Loneliness is a good model, for instance. I’d also recommend that you select a piece of media that you know something about and begin talking about it from the very beginning of your reflection, so that there is no confusion as to what you’re discussing.
Although I am of course open to you reflecting on a contemporary piece, selecting something more historical is admittedly a bit easier, I think. As an example, some of the images from the Wellcome Institute in London would be perfect, and are also online: https://wellcomecollection.org/images-institute/?image=9
