One of the core values at W. P. Carey is Integrity. What does academic integrity mean to you?

W. P. Carey

Academic Integrity means everything to me. I remember the instance from my formative years when I
was preparing for India’s toughest yet most rewarding admissions test, the Joint Entrance
Examination conducted by IITs. Under peer pressure I joined a renowned preparation institute. A few
weeks after joining, I was advised by the head of our prep institute to upgrade to a “Special Batch”
where they guaranteed a high score on IIT-JEE. I asked other students in my group who had chosen
to join the Special Batch what was the difference in experience. They said that the teachers in the
Special Batch were ex-IIT professors who had earlier designed IIT-JEE papers, and were therefore
“well aware of what will be asked in the test.”

All I had to do was pay 100,000 INR in addition to the 50,000 INR I had already paid. I refused to take the bait-it was worthless to cheat my way into an IIT. One of my friends who had joined the Special Batch, did score very high and joined an IIT, while I scored below expectations and joined Gitam University for my undergraduate studies. Coincidentally, my friend and I joined NITIE for the post graduate program in the same batch. I asked him whether the rumors about the benefits of Special Batch were true, and he replied affirmatively. But what goes around, comes around-eventually both of us made it to the same business school, he through his path, I through my hard work and integrity.

Describe your experience using Excel, Databases or Software Tools. How has this influenced your
decision to pursue a career in analytics?

W. P. Carey

At TCS, one of my core responsibilities was report generation where the reports were developed by
extracting huge chunks of data about trade exchanges by writing queries in MYSQL. The data was
then converted into a meaningful and readable format in SAP crystal reports tool. During my internship at NIKE India, I analyzed sales data from 280 stores and applied K-means algorithm clustering in Tableau to identify the clusters. By using these clusters, I developed an excel framework to analyze and forecast the sales trend. At Unilever I have developed an automated macro model which compares and evaluates the monthly forecast vis-à-vis sales numbers and gives the focus areas of improvement.

This tool was developed to improve the S&OP (sales and operations planning) process and thus improve the Forecast accuracy and forecast bias of the category. I have also designed and developed the entire S&OP process on Anaplan, a cloud-based computing tool, for HUL India portfolio Working with increasingly intricate quantitative analytical tools has made me more confident of my capability to keep pace with the rapid advancements in optimization technologies. It is beyond debate that insights drive efficacy and subsequent innovation in analytics, the greatest example of which is machine learning.

What is your target industry post-graduation? What impact do you want to make in your industry using analytics?

W. P. Carey

I don’t have a target industry post-graduation; rather, I have a target vertical wherein I wish to apply
my knowledge of analytics. I am keen on applying analytics to supply chain in any industry, from
goods to services, by working in a Supply Chain Consulting firm. I aim to move into supply chain
consulting, so as to find a larger laboratory of supply chain management challenges which await
feasible and long term solutions through analytics. There is little doubt that supply chain is the bottle
neck despite much advance in technology, and the less developed the country, the greater the bottleneck.

I see proficiency and experience with analytics as the most reliable way of resolving this bottleneck. Through the program at W.P. Carey School of Business, I will expand the breadth of applicability of my skills. I highly value peer learning after my study at NITIE, and acknowledge its crucial role in improving long term decision making skills. Through the MS program, and further through my professional experience, I will gain incisive understanding of the differences, and similarities, between supply chain challenges in developed countries and those in emerging economies, so that I can efficiently customize the solutions for both large and medium sized clients globally
