Videotape Session and Written Self-Critique
Responsibilities of the client:
- With you partner, choose a character for your role play. Prepare ahead of time by thinking about your role and considering how you believe the character would respond to questions. Be a minimally cooperative client in the sense that you are at least minimally forthcoming (i.e., you are voluntarily seeking help) and do not remain silent for the entire session. Present yourself and answer the clinician’s questions in a manner consistent with how you believe your character would. Make sure you remain in character throughout the session.
- At the end of the interview provide some feedback to the counselor by having your counselor leave the room at the end of the session and taking a moment to provide video recorded feedback for the both the counselor and course instructor to review. Speak to the following issues: Did you feel listened to? Judged? Comforted? Insulted? What core counseling skills did your counselor use and how effective were their usage? Remember to use the feedback sandwich and provide both positive feedback and constructive criticism.
Responsibilities of the clinician:
- Focus on the “core” helping skills. This is an initial meeting with a client. Therefore, your task is to establish rapport with the client and begin to develop an understanding of him or her. Problem identification, clarification and minimal encouragement of change are also primary responsibilities. You are not expected to solve the problem or generate solutions, but there may be limited instances where goal clarification, action planning, and considering alternatives and consequences may be indicated. Also, keep track of time. In the “real-world” you will have time constraints. Your session should go no longer than 20 minutes. You should end the session by providing a brief summary for the client of the session. Your ability to keep track of time and wrap-up the session will be noted.
- Review the tape and critique by the client. Then engage in a written self-critique of your performance. The reflection paper should be 2-3 double-spaced pages* (12 Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins) and should include the following components:
- A description of the client’s presenting problem, feelings, and affect,
- A description of what core counseling skills were utilized and why you chose to use those specific skills (i.e., what were your goals in using them),
- A description of what you might pursue in future sessions with the client and why,
- A self-critique of the session including what you think you did well and what you would do differently if you could repeat the session. Note: This is the most important section (see rubric) and should constitute at least half of the paper. This is also your chance to show your instructors your knowledge of effective counseling strategies even if you were not able to incorporate all of them into your video.
