Understand the roles of government and business in pursuing social and economic goals;
2. Contrast theoretical traditions about and global approaches to the economic role of government;
3. Relate political, social and economic changes to changes in the national and global environments;
4. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the ways that business and government respond to the dynamics of globalisation; and
5. Undertake projects requiring research, analysis and the effective communication of the results in writing.

Students are required to write an academic essay of 1,500 words, answering one of the essay questions below. Your essay must follow appropriate academic essay
structure (introduction, description, analysis and conclusion) with the inclusion of a clear thesis statement that indicates an argument and addresses the essay
question. Headings are not to be used in this essay.

Choose and answer one (1) of the following essay questions:
1. Compare the welfare OR healthcare OR public transport system in two countries. Analyse the government-business relationship and explain why one system is more
effective than the other. Draw upon relevant unit theory to support your answer.

2. Explain the government-business relationship in the car manufacturing industry in Australia. Did the government make the right decision to no longer provide
financial support to the struggling industry? Why/why not?

3. Tesla’s innovation has opened up new market opportunities within the automotive industry. How has the automotive industry responded to the new competition? What
should the government’s role be? Protecting already established industries and jobs, supporting new innovative and sustainable businesses, or leaving it to the market
and consumer demand?

4. Are passive industry policies more effective than anticipatory industry policies? Discuss, using examples from the Global Financial Crisis and drawing upon the
concepts taught in this unit.

5. Is government or business best placed to address climate change? Discuss, using examples and drawing upon the concepts taught in this unit.

Students are to write their essay in full prose, using appropriate paragraphs (approximately 100-150 words each paragraph), and a variety of high quality, academic
sources (references). A minimum of 15 references is required for this essay. The types of sources that you may wish to draw upon, with the highest quality references
being academic journal articles and books, include:

1. Academic journal articles;
2. Academic books, including edited books;
3. Reports from international institutions such as the OECD and World Bank;
4. News media articles;
5. Government websites; and
6. Websites from businesses, industry groups, consumer groups or professional bodies.

Ensure that you read the assessment criteria outlined below.

Referencing and Submission Requirements: A minimum of 15 different references is required for this essay. Be careful using the internet – it offers information,
sometimes wildly inaccurate, while also not necessarily providing a strong critical analysis. The use of encyclopaedia-style web sources (for example
http://www.wikipedia.org/ and www.thefreedictionary.com) is NOT acceptable at this level of study and any instance of using such references will significantly affect
your grade. To be considered for a Distinction grade or above, students are expected to draw upon academic journals, texts and high-quality references, and exceed the
minimum standards.

It is required that you include a list of references (a list of the references actually cited in-text) at the end of the essay (in alphabetical order by author
surname) which is presented in a recognised Author/Date referencing system i.e. APA or Harvard (see http://canberra.libguides.com/referencing). The reference list
forms part of the essay and is not to be submitted as a separate file. Reference lists submitted as separate files will be ignored by the marker. All information
relating to the reference is to be included – if you cannot find the year of publishing or the author, then it is probably not an appropriate academic reference. Page
numbers are required for in-text references. Please note that the requirements for referencing set out in this unit may be different from examples provided in the
referencing guides. Where there is a conflict about the style of referencing (for example, the use of page numbers), you are required to follow the unit outline.

Write in the Third Person: Students must write in the third person for this assignment. For example, rather than writing ‘In this essay, I will argue…’, write: ‘This
essay will argue…’. Writing in the third person is a formal writing skill which you must practise while undertaking this unit. If you do not write in the third person
in this assignment your work may be heavily penalised.

Word Count Rules: The word count is conducted by using the word count function in Microsoft Word by highlighting the first word of the first sentence to the last word
of the last sentence. The word count includes all in-text references and quotes but does not include the title or the reference list. Plus or minus 10% leeway is given
for the word count, for example, a word limit of 1,500 words must be between 1,350-1,650 words. Markers will ignore those parts of the written work that exceed the
word limit, and submissions which are under the word limit will be considered as not representing a completed assessment task. Excessive use of quotes will be heavily
penalised. Writing to a set word count is a requirement in almost every profession, and presenting an argument within the bounds of a word count demonstrates partial
achievement of Learning Outcome

The Academic Essay will be marked with consideration of the following criteria:
Clarity and correctness of writing and editing (for example: grammar, spelling and punctuation, including use of capital letters);
Evidence of understanding the assignment expectations and requirements, i.e. following instructions (for example: word count, minimum references, etc.);
Evidence of understanding the essay question and answering all components of the question.
Ability to articulate a clear argument that is substantiated and well-supported in reflection of the assessment task;
Evidence of reading broadly, considering various points-of-view, and applying relevant material.
Discussion and critical analysis of relevant concepts, theories and issues reflecting understanding of the issues and the relationships between elements of the unit;
Quality of structure and written expression, including the logical arrangement and presentation of information, paragraph structure, sentence construction, and quality
of prose;
Proper referencing, acknowledgement and citation of sources, including in-text referencing and presentation of the reference list – using APA or Harvard-style with the
inclusion of page numbers in-text;
Quality of references, where academic journal articles score the highest, but inclusion of other relevant credible sources is also expected; and
Overall quality of essay, including structure of the argument, adequacy of examples and use of facts and figures to support the argument, use of critical thinking and
analysis, as well as the soundness of conclusions.
