Reflection Paper
Purpose: Understand the process of death and to explore the role of culture in death
Directions: Death—our own and others’—is an inevitable experience of life. The process of dying and the experience of death is value-laden, meaning that how we understand death, the meaning we make of it, how we express our feelings about it, and the rituals surrounding it are influenced by our values. You have already read a blog post (http://mazellejoy.tumblr.com, Stories 8 and 9) that details a parent’s experience of her child’s death, and your lab section has already identified the parent’s values, beliefs, and cultures that have shaped this experience.
In this final 3- full page reflection paper, describe the values that influence your experience of death. It may help to reflect on previous experiences with death. What did you do? How did you feel? What kind of support did you receive? How did others respond to the death? What rituals did you go through, and what was their purpose? Where did you get these values? How did you learn what to do during times of grief? Which cultural groups have influenced these behaviors/feelings/thoughts, and how? After reflecting for a moment, write about identify your values and how you came to learn them. Please note: this paper should not describe specific instances and rituals of death; rather, it should describe your values, how you learned them, what cultures influenced them, and how.
