Unconscious bias is built into our brains because as human beings we have absorbed messages for hundreds of years that tell us who belongs at the top of the racial hierarchy, and who belongs at the bottom. As Americans, we are not really good at seeing a racist impact, when there is no apparent racism. – If a white male student walked into the classroom of a white teacher, exhibiting energetic behavior, the white student would typically be looked upon as clever. If a black student entered the classroom with the same behavior, it might make the white teacher feel the need to keep a closer eye on the student. – If a Middle Eastern person is pulled aside and searched at an airport check-in line, the reaction of the passengers is likely to be more suspicious and concerning than if a white person was pulled aside and searched. – Even an individual from a different minority group, will admit to attending a white person at a business first, over a Latino or person of color.
