Turkish Gov’s Restriction on Media Academic Essay

Hi there, I have a writing assignment from Global Writing class and we have to write a critical analysis about how Turkish government restricts media(shutting down many media outlets and detention on journalists) and how this single side of story affects in terms of public understanding(what’s going on in Turkey) and journalists’ freedom of speech. I’ve gathered more than 10 different sources that you can use for this assignment, and here is the prompt.
Prompt: We began the fall with Chimamanda Ngozi’s TED Talk, “The Danger of a Single Story.” As we’ve read about Turkey, we’ve recognized myriad examples of intercultural and political conflicts born of the tendency of readers and listeners of all stripes to listen and adhere to a single story. We’ve asked: Who tells the story of a conflict, a culture, or a people? How do stories and their tellers shape our understanding of the world in which we live?
In this assignment, you will choose one specific topic under the broader umbrella of Contemporary Turkish culture (e.g. freedom of speech, clothing styles, media, food, sports, journalism, democracy, finance). By poring through American, European, and Turkish media outlets, reaching into the world of real-time social media, and examining political documents, you will gather multiple stories about your topic.
As you examine these stories, you will think deeply about the sources who tell them. What empowers the authors? What limits their knowledge? Importantly, whose voice seems absent from the conversation? Use this study of media portrayals of a specific issue in contemporary Turkey as a case study to illustrate your answer to the following question: How can global citizens employ writing and other media to develop an informed and just perspective of a contemporary issue? PURPOSE To exhibit strong research skills. To explore the purpose and breadth of Global Writing. To write with a strong critical perspective about an evolving issue
. SPECIFICATIONS Cite at least three different forms of media: • Non-fiction writing • Journalism • Op-ed/Editorial • Twitter account • Fiction writing • Film/documentary film
SETUP AND ORGANIZATION Final products should contain a strong, specific thesis. Papers may range in length from 4-8 pages, not including a robust bibliography. Cite in MLA format (parenthetical citations acceptable).
