Final Paper: Country Study Research Paper Instructions and submission area
Late papers are not accepted. Paper must be submitted no later than 11:55 PM on Sunday of this week. You will not be able to submit after that date and time.
FINAL EXAM: A COUNTRY STUDY
**READ THIS DOCUMENT IN ITS ENTIRETY (including the rubric which details how points are distributed/deducted**
TOPIC SECTION
Globalization has affected every country on the globe and the cultures of many nations are actually very different from even 50 years ago. Some have been affected in positive ways and others in negative ways. For this paper, you will research the effects of globalization on the people in the country that you are select for a list of countries to research (see below). Focus on the people and how their lives have been affected, not on GNP.As you will learn through the course, GNP is not a measure of the well-being of the people of a nation.
NOTE: I do not want a paper that reads like the CIA World Factbook or is just a lot of information copied from sources. I want you to apply the knowledge you have gained from the course materials and readings to your discussion of the topics.
You must select one of the following hypotheses and state it (as written below) in your introduction after conducting your research.
1. Globalization has been good for the people of my country.
2. Globalization has NOT been good for the people of my country.
You are to address the following topics as they pertain to your country (a discussion of all topics must be included). The topic must be discussed in the section provided for it in the template.
Your final exam is a research paper for which you wrote draft 1 earlier in the course. Be sure to review the feedback on draft 1 so that you understand how your final paper will be graded and what I will be looking for. What is included in this paper:
Title page: this is the first page of the template. Be sure that you have completed what is indicated.
Introduction: a brief overview of what you discuss in the paper AND the thesis statement written exactly as indicated in the instructions (copy it word-for-word from the instructions)
Revised History section: revisions based on feedback from draft 1 should be submitted. Be sure all work is cited correctly
Revised Population section: revisions based on feedback from draft 1 should be submitted. Be sure all work is cited correctly
Poverty section: revisions based on feedback from draft 1 should be submitted. Be sure all work is cited correctly
New Environment section: Be sure all work is cited correctly. (this section must explore the current time period (do not go back prior to the year 2000). You are researching whether globalization has led to damage to the environment in your country. Think about the example that we discussed in the weekly discussion about the environment with NAFTA and the border. After NAFTA factories sprang up in Mexico along the U.S. border because U.S. corporations could manufacture there using cheap labor and no environmental controls. As a result, the area is one of the most polluted on the continent and the health of people in the area has become very poor). Is there a relationship between the environmental issues in your country and globalization? Give specific examples not generalities. Be sure that you clearly explain how any environmental issue you discussed is related to globalization and remember, you may find environmental issues that are not the result of globalization.
Health section: (this section must explore the current time period (do not go back prior to the year 2000). In this section you are exploring whether globalization has affected disease patterns and is healthcare available to all people equally. Has globalization bettered or worsened the health of the people of your country? If medical care is available, is it available to all people or just a select group? What illnesses can be attributed to globalization and how are they related to globalization? Example: here is an example of the type of disease and healthcare issue you should be looking at. At https://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/04/30-12 you will find a brief article that talks about how swine flu developed in Mexico as a result of the factory farms and how because of pharmaceutical patents people were denied access to the drugs needed for this disease. Look for similar things in your countries. (this source is not academically acceptable for use in a paper but can serve as a guide of what to look for as you conduct your research).
Indigenous section: (this section must explore the current time period (do not go back prior to the year 2000). For this section you are exploring how globalization has affected the indigenous populations. We are NOT looking for such things as loss of culture, but actual events causing harm. One example is the building of dams, pipelines, etc. that often force indigenous people from their homes. The type of information found at https://www.sjweb.info/sjs/pjnew/PJShow.cfm?pubTextID=8957 is what you are looking for (this source is not academically acceptable for use in a paper but can serve as a guide of what to look for as you conduct your research).
Peasant Protest section: Protest against the effects of globalization (are there protests in your country against globalization or its effects. For instance, in the Muslim nations there are huge protests against Western nations and the influence of the Western cultures on the people). Because we did not discuss all forms of protest in class, I recommend that you focus on peasant protest. In our discussion I posted links with examples of peasant protest which should guide you to the type of information you need to research for this section.
Conclusion: this is a paragraph that summarizes your findings regarding the thesis statement you selected. In order to determine your conclusion, you need to assess whether globalization had a negative effect on each of the topics explored. For instance, if there was a negative effect on the majority of topics you would support the thesis that it has not been good for your country.
Reference page: correctly formatted as per previous guidelines.
**NOTE**: Following the final paper instructions in Moodle is a template (formatted in ‘APA’) that you will download and complete for your final paper. You are required to use this template and failure to do so will result in a 10 point deduction, Do NOT copy any previous feedback comments or rubrics. This must be a clean copy of the research you are submitting.
Please submit it in the designated area as a file attachment (do NOT copy/paste to submit).
GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW
Writing Guidelines:
**NOTE** No quotes (use of quotations copied word for word from the original text) are allowed in your paper . If your paper is found to contain quotes, the percentage that is quoted will be deducted. For instance, if 10% of your paper is quoted, you will lose 10% of the total points available. If 51% or more is found to be quoted, the paper will be returned to you with a grade of -0-. Anything copied word for word and not in quotation marks is plagiarism and will be put on file but this should not be a problem since nothing word for word is allowed period. All work must be in your own words.
1. **IMPORTANT** All parts of the paper must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx) using the supplied template. If you do not have Word, the college computer labs do and you will need to use them to type your final paper. I will not accept work submitted in other formats. Do NOT use Microsoft Works, Word Perfect or other formats.
2. Length of paper: the length of the paper not counting the cover sheet or reference pages must be 6-10 pages.
3. A template has been provided for you and must be used. The template is set up in APA format which you are to use for all assignments. I am not requiring headers or an abstract. The format is:
Title page (double spaced, Times New Roman 12) with name of paper, your name, school affiliation (class ANT362).
Body of paper (double spaced, Times New Roman 12, headings for each required section of the paper [these are already in the template; do not remove them], and in-text citation for all sources.
Reference page (double spaced, Times New Roman 12, references in alphabetical order and in APA format (see documenting sources section of the following site if you are unsure of how to create a reference list: https://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/resdoc5e/RES5e_ch06_o.html
4. Use spell checking and grammar checking tools. Proofread before turning in your paper. Presentation is an important part of college writing. **NOTE**: If you have difficulty with writing, you may wish to visit the writing tutors at the Learning Center. You may get assistance with your papers (feedback) via email if you are not on campus. Please use the Plattsburgh OWL (see syllabus or contact instructor) and send both a copy of your draft AND the instructions for the assignment.
5. As indicated, a template is provided that you MUST use (using the template is not an option; it is required. Download the template and save it to your computer. Do NOT remove the topic/section headings.
Selecting Resources
You must have a minimum of 10 sources for the paper and they must not be more than 10 years old. You must use at least 2 sources for each topic discussed. Writing a topic from one source is a book/article report, not a research paper. You have access to the University library databases and can download peer reviewed articles from there, you may use hard copy books or you may use the Internet (the Internet is more difficult to use and you must carefully critique and be sure that you know who is writing anything you use from the Internet).
The quality of your paper is directly related to the quality of the sources you use to support your work. Remember “garbage in, garbage out”. Think of the sources as you would evidence in a trial. If you were on trial for your life, you would want your witnesses to be experts in the field about which they testify, not someone who writes a blog on the Internet about crime. Using poor evidence in your trial would get you convicted; using poor sources in your work lowers its quality.
Resources for your paper: you must use academically acceptable resources for your references. You are a university student now and the types of resources that you may have used in high school are no longer suitable for use as references in your work. You should be reading a higher quality, more collegial type of source. If the material you use to support your work is from poor sources, your paper will have little or no validity.
When you find a resource that you feel you would like to use, you must critique it for validity. You critique the AUTHOR, not the material and always ask why you would consider the author an expert whose word you would accept on a topic. If you cannot identify the author, do not use the source. An author can be a person or an organization. The following website will help you to critique Internet sources: Evaluating Web Pages: Techniques to Apply and Questions to Ask at https://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html
Do NOT use the following sources as references. You may use them for preliminary reading to get some basic information about your topic and to get ideas of where to focus your research but they should not be used as references for your work.
1. Wikipedia: I do NOT want to see Wikipedia in your list of references or blogs.
2. Encyclopedia (including electronic encyclopedia or almanacs such as Encarta) or dictionaries.
3. Popular magazines (Time, Newsweek, etc.). If you have difficulty distinguishing between a scholarly journal and a magazine, you may wish to go to https://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/skill20.html
4. Media or news sources (PBS, CNN, BBC or other sources that are for giving news)
5. Travel or other commercial sources from the Internet
6. Student work found on the Internet (beware of the .edu sites and know who the author is) OR materials designed for K-12 students.
7. Work for which you cannot identify the author (the author can be a person or an organization/government department.
8. Holy Books (Bible, Koran, etc.) or religious websites
9. Your text book (if you talk about something in the text, it must be cited; however, it does not count toward a required number of sources)
If you use the Internet for research, I recommend that you use https://scholar.google.com rather than just google.com to access more scholarly articles on your subject.

Citing Guidelines/Plagiarism:
Your paper must be cited using APA format. This means that you MUST have in-text notation (citation in the body of the paper that indicates where you are using knowledge obtained from a reference) and a reference page. A paper is not considered to be cited without in-text citation and will not be accepted with a reference page alone. A reference list does NOT cite a paper, but is merely a list of where the citations are from. If you have problems with citation you may wish to use:
Diana Hacker Guide to APA: click on links for in-text citation, list of references and sample paper.https://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/resdoc5e/RES5e_ch06_o.html
A paper is considered plagiarized if any of the following occur:
Material is copied word for word and not both in quotation marks (or block quote for 40 or more words) and cited. An in-text citation must immediately follow the final quotation mark. An entry must be made on the reference page. If this occurs in 10% or less of the paper, a corresponding reduction in grade will occur. If this occurs in more than 10% of the paper, a -0- will be given and a report filed with the university.
Material from sources is paraphrased or summarized without giving credit to the author of the original ideas by correctly citing. Paraphrase plagiarism is common and must be avoided. Using the work of others and just changing a few words is still plagiarism. If this occurs in 10% or less of the paper, a corresponding reduction in grade will occur. If this occurs in more than 10% of the paper, a -0- will be given and a report filed with the university.
Presenting work that is not your own either by borrowing the work of another person or purchasing work. This type of plagiarism will result in a grade of -0- and a report being filed with the university.
Using only a reference page and no in-text citations. A reference page does not cite your work. Citation occurs in the body of the paper to indicate where material that is not your own is used or discussed. The reference list is merely a listing of where the cited material was obtained. Both in-text citations and a corresponding reference on the reference page must be included for each source used. This type of plagiarism will result in a grade of -0- and a report being filed with the university.
Fabrication of any type. This includes fabricating a reference list and citations of sources that were not actually used in the paper. Your instructor does visit the sources referenced. This type of plagiarism will result in a grade of -0- and a report being filed with the university.
