Tinder and Relationships among emerging adults Academic Essay

Research & Project Management Skills – Assessment 2 – Tinder & Relationships among emerging adults.

The questionnaire and data analysis should be designed to answer the following questions:
a. Overall, what are people’s attitudes to the ‘target issue’?
b. Do these attitudes vary systematically with the type of person?
c. What statistically significant relationships, if any, exist between these different attitudes and personal traits?

1) Research proposal
a) A title page: title of project.

Tinder & relationships among emerging adults.

b) Introduction (about two pages)
- statement of issue to be investigated and its importance
- brief literature review (incl. a mixture of academic and non-academic sources)

(See assessment 1)
This study aims to look at the importance that the new online dating methods, specifically the mobile application Tinder, have upon emerging adults preferences when getting involved in relationships. As many literature reviews acknowledge the raise of a hookup culture among emerging adults, the literature upon digital dating and Tinder is not enough reported and this study aims to participate as to a better understanding of Tinder users, and the impact of this mobile application in our current relationship building spectrum.

Three Subject variable/Personal traits chosen:
– Tinder User vs Non-User (see if makes big diff between weekly users and yearly users)
– Tinder users aiming for Committed Relationships vs aiming for Casual sexual relationships
– Male vs Female
Their plausible relevance to the target issue being investigated: As we try to answer all three research questions, these variables will help us frame our targeted group into specific segments. This will enable us to better understand their answers.

c) Research aim. This is to then be broken down into a set of Hypotheses, Objectives or Questions. (about half a page)

Acknowledge fact that previous Question (assessment 1) could not be answered because of ethical limitations of privacy regarding the university values and rules. Encourage further research to go explore in more details the possible correlations between Tinder and Casual Sexual Relationships.

However, new research questions are:
Q1. What type of Relationship do emerging adults aim for when using Tinder?
Q2. What is the impact of gender on Tinder usage?
Q3. What Relationship is facilitated through Tinder?

d) A discussion of your intended methodology. We will discuss things that would be included here throughout the semester but we would definitely expect to see ref to: sample frames, justification for inclusion or variables in your survey, details on the mechanism for survey distribution, approach to analysis etc.

Method: Sample made homogeneous, all participants are young adults (between 18-29 years old, older participants were taken out), they are heterosexual (took out homosexual, bisexual participants), and have either used Tinder during the past year or never in their lifetime (“other” category taken out because of confusion of their situation)
Questionnaire realized through google forms, was submitted on the social media Facebook of the research student. Through snowball effect, 197 answers were collected from participants around the world. These were then transferred to excel as a table, and sorted into a homogeneous sample. The remaining 159 set of answers were then coded into a spreadsheet format and analysed using ‘univariate’, ‘bivariate’ and graphical analysis using the SPSS software. The open-ended questions were taken apart and analysed using “content analysis” separately, either into specific categories or left as such to collect the raw train of thoughts of the sample. Some of the open-ended answers are being used in the results part as quotes.

e) References

Note: It is expected that material from assessment 1 will be used in this first part of assessment 2 as both assessments are on the same topic.

2) Questionnaire and Covering Letter This will consist of two documentsa. a. A copy of the covering letter to be provided to survey participants – Appendix 1
b. The final copy of the questions correctly laid out – Appendix 2

3) Written Report
In this section students will outline the key findings from their research.
a. Presentation of your research results

b. Discussion of those results in the context of your literature review in part 1.

c. Key research conclusions.
