The structure:
1. The proposal needs to follow the traditional structure of any academic document and
especially of essays in UK academia: an introduction, main body and conclusion.

2. In the introduction you need to justify your topic and theme: why one should be bothered/interested in your area of study. Please note that in the introduction we
talk more about the topic than the actual question).

3. The main body will need to have 3 key parts
a. A literature review – What are the key
dividing lines in the literature? What are the major flaws in the literature? What does
the proposal try to contribute in the field?
b. A methodology – what methods are you using and why is it appropriate? What are its
advantages and disadvantages? Why not others
c. A discussion of your expected/future results – i.e. what is the broader significance of
your expected future results? What are you aiming to find and what are the implications of your results for theory (which you discussed in the literature of your
theme)? Let me use an
example of ISIS: a simple expectation can be that we want to test some existing theories on the role of terrorist organisations.

4. In the conclusion, as always it needs to discuss the key points of the proposal (i.e. question, methods and expected contributions/findings).
