What led to the rise of political parties?

            Dating back to the 1970’s, Jefferson had founded a political party, the Republican Party.  Alexander Hamilton kept the label Federalist.  Jefferson and Madison had created the Republican party to defeat John Adams and succeed Washington in 1796.  As Adams attempted to succeed in office, party activity grew even more.  When Jefferson won office, the Republican won office and became a first political party to take direct power in Wasington.  As the party grew, political parties diminished and nearly disappeared as Jefferson had hoped, since there was no ancestral affiliation to any party. 

            After  1828, laws were passed to allow more people to vote.  This increased political activity.  This created a greater interest in government and a stronger loyalty and affiliation to ideas of political parties. 

            In the mid 1800’s, slavery had become a very hot issue.  The nation was divided into Pro-slavery and Anti-slavery supporters.  These were the Democrats and Republicans respectively.  This made most states one-party states and further increased the role of political parties.  As reform started to take place, the party lines started to fade. 

            As time grew, parties gained more and more power and slowly incorporated themselves into government.
