The Monopoly games that were played in class, are a way for you to see how life chances are shaped by social stratification policies. The scenarios and rules influence the life chances that the games’ families experience. You are expected to use the information from both your textbook and class lectures to discuss and explain the outcomes of the games. How does the American social stratification system, influence the life chances of the family you played in each game?
The substance of your papers is a discussion about life chances and social stratification based on your experiences in the games. Sociological theories explain why societies develop policies that structure excess wealth the way they do. In your paper, you need to discuss the elements of social stratification (wealth, prestige, and power).
Your paper should be approximately 5 pages in length.
The first page should be an overview of social stratification in the United States (what is social stratification, what are the major dimensions of how are wealth, prestige, and power divided in the U.S., and how do these divisions influence the life changes of people in these groups?)
The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th pages should be discussions about each of the Monopoly games played- page 2- game 1; page 3- game2, and page 4- game 3. Don’t forget to discuss the special rules that your team created, and how this might have influenced the outcome of the games.
Write a conclusion for the 5th page, incorporating both the overview of social stratification, a broader discussion of how social stratification influences life chances, and patterns that you observed in playing the Monopoly games.
You need to include the charts for all 3 games in your paper. Toward the end of your paper, if you would like to comment on the fairness or unfairness of outcomes from the games, you may do so. If you think the scenarios and rules are realistic or unrealistic, this is the appropriate place to comment.
