As we conclude our study of the nature of social welfare policy in the U.S., you have probably concluded that Americans will never really embrace strong social welfare policies designed to prevent and cure economic and social suffering. Yet, the social work profession is embedded in the belief that its interventions and the social welfare programs that deliver them can and will prevent and end such suffering, only if funding and program support were a strong reality of a secure social welfare safety net in the U.S. One of the central roles of social work, as discussed at the beginning of this course, is social justice and human rights advocacy.
