The major assignment provides opportunity for students to focus their study on poverty. The research should illustrate the student’s grasp of the poverty concepts
taught throughout the course. Choose ONE of the following topics/questions to focus your discussion:
Questions:
a) On 26 June 2012 the Senate referred the following matter to the Senate Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Committees for inquiry and report.
The adequacy of the allowance payment system for jobseekers and others, the appropriateness of the allowance payment system as a support into work and the impact of
the changing nature of the labour market.

• The key problems and issues identified in the submission
• The coherency of the key arguments including the use of research in the submission
• Possible counter arguments to the ones presented in the submission
• The proposed responses to key problems and issues
• The implications of proposed responses for those on “allowance payments’

b) Research one current strategy to end poverty either in Australia or internationally. Critically evaluate the components of that strategy including
• How it draws on international and national conventions and frameworks
• Its capacity to involve and include affected people
• Its funding sources and sources of legitimacy
• The kinds of practices it requires of professionals involved
• Its limitations and strengths in achieving its objectives.
