Reflection on ethical issues in ultrasound

Reflection:

A reflective piece of writing describing an aspect of learning in my ultrasound clinical placement which has changed your perspective of the ethical issues in ultrasound, or has provided insight into some aspect of ultrasound. I have decided to write a reflection on ethical issues in ultrasound.

Please start off the essay with:
My ultrasound clinical placement at PRC Bentley Hospital in my Medical Imaging Course exposed me to a wide variety of patients. These included pregnant patients, patients who had musculoskeletal conditions, abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds.

3. Describe the key aspects of various standard examinations or operations within the chosen field (ultrasound) .

4. Analyse the future directions/current research of the chosen field (ultrasound).

Ethical issues occur when a given scenario or decision creates a moral conflict
concerning the perspectives of society. Thus, based on the research article titled Ethical
Issues in Ultrasound, the author has grouped the ethical issues in ultrasound in two main
categories; one includes the ethical issue that society and the patient must grapple and the
second category includes the ethical issues that impact healthcare professionals due to the
nature of their work (Orange, 1985). According to the author, the ethical issues that the patient
and the society grapple with are significantly determined by the existing social value system.
However, the prevalence of social, and moral values has significantly conflicted with the existing
medical and scientific facts. Moreover, the patients’ and society’s perspectives are based on
independent beliefs and values, making it difficult to harmonize into a common objective.
Therefore, ultrasound healthcare professionals are involved in the procedures, compelled with
conflicting ethical issues.
The social and patient ethical evaluation points to the moral conflicts that have arisen
regarding prenatal diagnosis and selective abortion. The proponents of selective abortion argue
that deformed children may contaminate the normal genetic pool and maybe a future social and
economic burden to their parents and society. However, the opponents of selective abortion
argue that deformed children may not reproduce (Orange, 1985). Moreover, based on the patient’s
and society’s concerns, every individual should be accorded the right to live. Furthermore, based
on scientific facts, even normal children are carriers of defective genes and may further
contaminate the existing genetic pool. Therefore, ultrasound healthcare professionals may be
divided between the conflicting ethical standards between the proponents and opponents of
selective abortion and prenatal diagnosis.
