1) Read the assignment prompt carefully! The assignment prompt for Guided Research Essay: Major Paper # 1-Klein –

2) Follow the formal academic writing formula in writing the paper: opening paragraph (hook, introduction, and thesis statement); body paragraphs (each with a topic sentence, quote, and analysis); and conclusion (restate the thesis statement and summarize the main points of the paper). You can find a document on the formula in the Course Documents tab on Blackboard (Formal Academic Writing Structure document).

3) Be sure that you use a direct quote in each paragraph in the body of the paper, and construct a proper in-text citation for each direct quote [for example: (Klein 173) or (173) depending on whether you mention the author in the lead-in to the quote. The one exception would be the paragraph on Bill Maher (people are to blame). Since it is a video, it will be difficult to have a direct quote. However, you should paraphrase something that Maher said and bring in his main points.

4) Be sure to follow the outline for the paper: the opening paragraph (with a hook, introduction, and thesis statement); two (2) analysis paragraphs on Klein’s book; two (2) analysis paragraphs on Friedman’s book; one (1) paragraph on Schellenberger’s/Nordhaus’ essay; one (1) paragraph on Bill Maher’s interview; and a conclusion. There should be eight (8) paragraphs in total.
