What are the benefits and hazards of the rapid growth in the US of unconventional oil and gas development (’fracking’) from the the economic, international political and environmental points of view ?
You are to write a 2-3 page (double spaced, typed) paper on the subject: ”What
are the benefits and hazards of the rapid growth in the US of unconventional oil
and gas development (’fracking’) from the the economic, international political and
environmental points of view ?” The paper should have 3 parts:
1. An introduction which defines the terms in the question clearly, including
an explanation of how ’fracking’ works with an emphasis on the physical concepts
involved.
2. A middle section presenting facts relevant to the question, including (1)current
total energy use from unconventionally produced gas and oil and its rate of increase
(2) the geographical locations of the new developments and their economic impacts
and (3) ,as quantitatively as possible, the environmental impacts the development,
including carbon dioxide production , water contamination and water stress, other
greenhouse gas production (particularly methane), other potential air pollution
issues and possible threats to agriculture and species habitat.
3. Use the information given in section 2. to draw the best conclusions you
can about the answer to the question. Summarize first the benefits and then the
risks and hazards. Finally summarize your judgement concerning the best way for
the US, including its federal, state and local governments, to respond to the rapid
implementation of this technology.
As in the previous paper assignment, you are to search the literature for sources.
However this subject is particularly likely to yield unreliable sources because the
subject is highly controversial and leads to biased presentations, both praising and
condemning these developments. Therefore I recommend the following two sources
to get you started:
