We are thinking this week about suicide prevention. I would like you to consider some personal aspect of your identity (sex, sexual identity, gender identity, ethnicity, religious/spiritual affiliation, socioeconmic status, etc), and locate an empirical research article addressing suicide among adolescents who also espouse that identity. For example, if you are looking at your ethnic background, you might search Google Scholar for "suicide prevention for [ethnicity] adolescents". The article should be either 1) a written report of a prevention that has been conducted, or 2) an article proposing a type of prevention.
For your response, I would like you to
summarize (in less that 3/4 of a page) the article
For an actual prevention, include the sample, main findings, and limitations
For a proposal, summarize the author’s key points and recommendations
Discuss the aspects of the prevention strategy that the researchers employed/proposed that you feel would be most helpful to someone of the identity you selected. Discuss why you feel this is the case
Imagine yourself providing this intervention to a young person. What would be most difficult for you? What would come most naturally? What biases or urges do you feel you would want to ignore?
Consider and discuss how it would be different for you helping someone with a very different identity than the one you selected (if you selected "male", think about how it would be to help a female, or a trans* individual, for example). What would be easier? What would be harder? What training would you want/need?
