Read Ch 4&5 Socrates and Plato and answer the following questions
1. Deity
What do you think of Plato’s idea that God could be co-eternal with other things? In other words, some
things, including God, have been around forever. Besides the Creation story of the Bible, are there any
other points about Christian doctrine that would have to be altered in order to accept Plato’s view? What
about the ‘dust’ God supposedly used to create?
2. Metaphysics
What did Plato think was real? How did he arrive at that conclusion? (Connect it to Socrates.) Do you agree
or disagree? If you disagree, what is the flaw in Plato’s reasoning? If you agree, then why is a rock,
say, less real?
Ch 6&7 Aristotle and the Stoics
1. Ethics
Discuss a few differences and similarities between Plato’s, Aristotle’s and the Stoic’s ethical theories.
What do you think of Aristotle’s idea that it is people that are moral or immoral, it is not the acts
themselves that are moral or immoral?
2. Epistemology
Discuss the differences between Plato’s, Aristotle’s and the Stoic’s theories of knowing. Plato and
Aristotle are considered 2 of the top 3 philosophers in the history of philosophy. All other epistemologies
until the 1800’s are thought to have either Platonic or Aristotelian elements in them. It is extremely
important for understanding the history of ideas/civilization that you understand the Platonic/Aristotelian
distinction. How can you relate to any of these ways of knowing today? Can you give a concrete example of
how you have seen the Platonic/Aristotelian distinction in you life?
