1.      What argument for the existence of God does William Paley give?  What objections to this argument does Palmer discuss in his book, Does the Center Hold?  Do you think any of these objections are valid?  Or are you convinced by Paley’s argument?  In answering these last questions, make sure you defend your position.  Also, you should make use of the comments on Paley’s argument that I included in my videos and comments on our blackboard site.

2.      In “God and the Problem of Evil,” B.C. Johnson uses the example of a baby burning to death in a house fire to illustrate the Problem of Evil.  What exactly is this problem?  How is Johnson’s example supposed to undermine belief in God?  Johnson also considers numerous attempts to rescue theism from the Problem of Evil.  Explain the three of these you find most convincing, and then explain the basis on which Johnson claims that they are unsuccessful as answers to the Problem of Evil.  Finally, what is your view?  Is Johnson right or can the existence of evil be reconciled with religious belief? Don’t just state your view but defend it.
