Create a State w/ Philosophical reasoning
This paper is for a senior level undergraduate philosophy course on Political Philosophy, which is based upon the Yale course “Moral Foundations of Politics” by Ian Shapiro, and the resources and videos of this course can be found online. Also, this paper makes will make up 20% of my grade in this course.
Below are the syllabus stipulations for this paper:
“This Project is intended to provide you an opportunity to develop and formulate your own intuitions about justice and rights. You will develop a socio-political framework, with explanation and justification, for building a contemporary, independent political association. Specifically, you are to write a paper that covers at lease the following matters:
-A declaration of independence from your current political association.
-A stipulation of who will/can be members.
-A constitution that briefly outlines political organization and structure (including any components necessary for instantiating your group’s conception of justice), and explain the rights and duties of the state and its citizens.
-An explanation of how your group will relate to other political associations.
-Most importantly, philosophical explanations and justifications for the principal elements of your project.
The project paper should be at least four pages in length, and should demonstrate a clear understanding of the relevant political theories. A first draft* is due early in the semesters, with a final version due later. I expect no research to be done for the draft. I do expect to see evidence that the course material influenced your ideas in the final version. The grade will be split between the two versions.”
*In the “additional materials” are my rough outline and the first draft (that I turned in at the beginning of the semester) giving an idea of what my paper is specifically focusing upon.

Below are comments from my professor on things I should consider going into my paper:
Perhaps dissolve German government instead of overthrow
Invite refugees to be citizens
Benthamite ideal doesn’t necessarily work
So consider ideas of Liberty and the work of Isaiah Berlin
If you focus on making everyone happy, that could lead to a very authoritarian government.
How will your judicial system look; specifically, what are your foundations for justice?
How do you get your judges? Election? Appointment? because this makes a difference when it comes to the voice and role of the population in government.
You need a codified system of rights
If you have communities that might operate upon a separate law system, particularly refugee communities that might try to enact sharia law, are you going to let the local communities decide how to deal with crimes and define criminal acts?
What are the conditions for possible happiness?
What are your international relations?
Are there any conditions under which your state would declare war?
When writing your paper, you should work the philosophical reasoning and justification into everything else (your concrete, practical discussions)
It seems your biggest issue is that you are pretending to be a value neutral system…
Will there be a basic social safety net?
What about healthcare?
What would maximizing liberty and happiness look like practically?
What particular features does your state have to have?
The paper also doesn’t need to be 7 pages as I specified, because the syllabus delineates that it should be at least 4 pages. However, I think to adequately cover the concepts he expects to be covered, it should be at least 7 pages.
Personal Note: I am not a philosophy major, but an anthropology major. I do have a background in religion. However, I am not familiar with philosophical jargon, so none of that is necessary and may seem out of character. My point is for you just to do the best you can and not to worry about sounding too discipline-specific.
