Assignment DescriptionThe Persuasive Speech Assignment is a mini argument developed into a speech presentation in which you impact the belief or behavior of your audience. Deliver the speech with a Manuscript style. At least 4 sources are required for this speech (outside of personal experience or peer testimony). These should be cited in your speech verbally, and in the body and reference page of your
required argument sheet. Sources may include written sources (books, magazines, journal articles, and newspapers), electronic sources and expert interviews. However, you must use respected,
credible sources. Additionally, vary your use of the sources such as example, definition, testimony, statistics, illustrations, etc. A formal argument is required according to the instructor’s
specifications outlined in the Argument Sheet Template. You should submit a well-organized, typed argument of your speech.Directions1. The topic of your speech should be substantive, that is, you should address a significant and contemporary issue with meaning and influence for the lives of your audience and persuade your
audience to believe as you do, or to respond in a particular way. 2. Rather than explain, teach, or share information, take a position regarding the issue and urge us to agree or act in accord with your position. 3. Remember that a part of your task is to analyze your classmates and link your topic with them in a way that will incite their interest and attention.4. There are no topics that are off limits; however, unless you can honestly approach them from a new perspective with insight into today’s relevance or direction of the argument, you should
not attempt to argue an overly done topic. I encourage you to think about what matters to you and think outside of the box when choosing a topic. The more specific- the better.5. Prepare the speech using the argument sheet and assessment rubric provided.6. Prepare the manuscript portion of the argument sheet using the examples provided.7. Cite the speech verbally (state where information was found- use BASE model from text), and use APA in outline.8. Record and upload your speech.Length: 3-4 minutes. Delivery: This speech should be delivered by manuscript, which means that it is prepared in advance, rehearsed, and read word-for-word. Use a conversational speaking style that is natural. Keep
movements and gestures natural. The key to a strong manuscript delivery is to engage the audience by finding natural breaks in the sentence structure and maintaining eye contact. A good rule is to
try to: deliver 1-3 sentences, look up, make eye contact, and reference your sheet again. The tone and rate as well as inflection are important to make sure that your speech does not sound
memorized or read.Visual: A visual is not required for this speech, as the focus will be on your content argument and delivery.Outlining: Complete the argument sheet template, including the manuscript using the examples provided in paragraph form.Submission: See the Support tab- Recording, Uploading, and Sharing. Label your speech file (mp4/ avi) and the speech prep sheet (.doc/ docx./pdf. rtf.) with the same convention
(LastName_Assignment) and post to the Speech Blog in the designated area for the speech assigned in the week (Persuasive). AssessmentPersuasive Speech Rubric- 130 pts.
