The paper should be 10-12 pages in length. Please use 12 point font, leave one inch margins and make certain that the lines are double spaced. Write the essay based upon the assignment below.
You must submit a copy of the paper online by the specified date via the course’s blackboard Safe Assign option. You should also submit a hardcopy by the due date to me (please put it in my mailbox in the department). If you cannot submit a hardcopy because you will not be on campus that Monday, you can send a copy of the paper directly to me via email by the due date ( please send me the paper in pdf file format – not Word file format.).
This is a think piece, and does not require any reading beyond that specified by the syllabus. You should cite the readings per standard academic practice. Though you are not required to do any outside research, you should feel free to illustrate an argument or point by using newspaper articles, website content, candidate ads etc… that have been published/posted/aired since the beginning of the year (1/1/16). In your bibliography, please include a citation and URL link to any such non-course assigned material.
This is an opportunity for you to show me that you have digested and thought about the assigned readings (including the readings assigned for the last two weeks of the course). I also look for a clear argument that is stated at the beginning of the paper and which is supported systematically throughout the paper.
Assignment:
Vavreck, in The Message Matters, does not discuss partisanship at length. How might the two different understandings of partisanship influence your assessment of Vavreck’s argument (if at all)? In other words, how would a fuller discussion of partisanship reinforce or weaken Vavreck’s typology of campaigns and her estimates of the consequences of campaigns. Also, please be certain to compare and contrast the standard view of partisanship with the alternative view of partisanship (and specify which perspective you find more persuasive and why you find it more persuasive). If you can, discuss what additional type(s) of analyses might Vavreck have undertaken to more fully explore the implications of partisanship for her argument.
