Organizational Structure
Part A – 150+words
One of your managers hears you have just completed your MBA. He looks at you and smirks and says, “All this emphasis on relationships is overrated. I have always made it clear to my subordinates what they need to do if they want to remain employed. All I have to say to them is ‘get it done and you will get rewarded, and if not, there will be consequences.’ It truly is that simple! Developing relationships with employees and suppliers or contractors, all that stuff is only good in the textbooks. It never delivers results.” Prepare a response to this manager and post it on the discussion board.
Part B – 150+words
Contrast the tradeoffs involved when an organization decides it is going to restructure. Be sure that you evaluate the critical organizational design variables that you would want to consider if you were heading up such a project. Next, evaluate the organizational chart for your current organization. Provide recommendations for revising the organizational design so it more effectively serves the mission of the firm and its many stakeholders
Part C – 150+words
Discuss the ethical implications of a leader’s role in the socialization of new hires into the preexisting culture of an organization. What responsibility does a company have to inform newly hired persons that it wants to shape their values, perceptions, and behavior to conform to the organization’s culture? What impact does socialization have on both individual and organizational effectiveness?
Part D – 150+words
Contrast the corporate values espoused by two Fortune 500 companies. Select two firms that seem to manifest very different cultures. Your response should focus on the tradeoffs you would experience working in the two firms in terms of the values you bring to the workplace. How might your values fit in or clash with the culture of these two organizations?
Part E
Each year Fortune magazine publishes a “Most Admired” list of the top companies in the United States. Firms are rated on these eight dimensions: innovativeness, quality of management, long-term investment value, social responsibility to the community and the environment, people management, quality of products and services, financial soundness, wise use of corporate assets, and, if international, a ninth dimension: effectiveness in doing business globally.
For this assignment, select a familiar organization (you are encouraged to select an organization in which you have been employed for at least 6 months). Then, choose one of the eight dimensions used to rate top U.S. companies in which the organization appears to be under performing. Prepare a PowerPoint presentation (12-15 slides) that addresses the following:
Identify a major issue the organization is facing and in which dimension (of the eight identified above) it is under performing. Explain the ramifications the under performance is currently having on the organization. Identify the likely consequence of failure to improve in the selected dimension.
Analyze the relevance of the current organizational structure, design, and culture and their influence on organizational effectiveness, especially in relationship to the dimension in which the organization is struggling.
Determine whether the organization embodies the principles and values of conscious culture and management and its relevance to improving organizational function.
Present a plan to bring about necessary improvement using Kotter’s 8-step change model.
Address possible challenges to the suggested change and your plans for managing those challenges.
Explain how different subsystems need to be realigned in order to bring about the change.
Detail any lessons learned and evaluate strategies that you as a manager will either avoid or engage in when designing the structure, building culture, and managing change in your organization.
Present evidence from at least three scholarly articles to support your position and proposed change initiative.
