Organisational Strategy

You have graduated from university and have gained a job as a Business Strategy Analyst for a global business consultancy.

Your first rotation as part of the graduate scheme is in the research department. You have been given the task of preparing a business report on how successful strategy-making takes place in different sectors (public, private and third). You are asked focus your analysis on one theme using one example from at least two sectors:
Public – healthcare, defence, environment, energy, water, food
Private – defence, housing, healthcare, energy, water, logistics
Third/not for profit – healthcare, environment
Scenario
Both your line manager and mentor are interested in how strategy can be understood in the current context. They would like you:
§To include theoretical concepts, author’s opinions, statistics, etc…
§To outline what you mean by successful strategy-making
§To explore the external and internal environments of an organisation and their inter-dependencies
§To use case studies in your analysis from at least two sectors (from public, private and not-for-profit sectors)
§To highlight advantages and limitations in your analysis and recommendations
§That a professional business report is essential
The aim of this report is for them to see your understanding of strategy theories and current practices to see how you can be involved in advising clients. They have noted that if it is good enough, you could be part of the team in the preparatory meeting with the next client.
