This activity is aimed at selecting multicultural musical resources that support social studies concepts and art experiences. It is also targeted at integrating the Common Core and State Standards for social studies, language arts and the arts). You will need to identify a multicultural theme appropriate for young children. Select related music, songs, dances, realia, and materials (including children’s literature) for classroom use. Collect materials and present them in a box. Include a written description of the contents:
Description of the theme – Vocabulary – Related Common Core and State Standards (social studies, language arts, arts) – Explanation about the role of music, movement, and drama in culture and concept development – Suggestions for classroom use and list of contents The prop box will include the following:
o Related music (recordings, lyrics) o Artifacts and realia related to the theme
o Materials to support movement experiences: Describe how activities support children’s development (cognitive development, social development, gross motor development)
o Children’s books (include at least five titles appropriate for all children including English language learners [ELL])
o Modifications for use with second language learners (ESOL learners)
o Adaptations for children with special needs Present in class and be creative in your presentation!
