write a research essay related to one of the texts we
have studied this semester. Any text on the syllabus is eligible for this assignment.
You will not be given a specific prompt. Rather, I want you to generate your own focus
and your own thesis. This thesis (or argument) should be based on a point of
contention or confusion you have regarding the text. It could also arise from efforts on
your part to deepen your understanding of a specific text.

Regardless of what form your argument takes, keep in mind that you should directly
address and analyze one of the works of literature we have studied this semester.
Beyond that, you are also required to draw on at least one piece of outside research to
help you craft your argument. Ideally, this piece of research would take the form of
literary criticism. Typically, this outside research will help you support your own
argument / interpretation. It could also provide a foundation from which to argue.
Regardless, a critical component of this essay is drawing on research from a credible
source, and keep in mind that your research should also be relatively current. I would
also strongly encourage you to incorporate more credible research, as your thesis
dictates.

Your essay should:

Be in correct MLA format

Have an identifiable thesis

Oany out your argument in a coherent and persuasive manner
