Detailed Instructions for the Interview Assignment
C Create and conduct an interview with a student with exceptionalities or a caregiver (not someone interviewed or observed for another class). This can be someone you already know or you may have to go to a parent advocacy group or another school to find someone to interview. This person should be someone who has been involved in the special education process. Before you interview this person, you must obtain written consent. That consent form can also be found in the Interview Assignment folder. Please scan and email, fax, or mail it to me.
Create a list of interview questions and obtain input on their appropriateness. Address the interviewees’ perspectives relative to legal, cultural, and ethical issues and their relation to the special education services they receive. As you are coming up with questions, be sure to think about the issues above. You will want to ask questions related to each of those issues (legal, cultural, and ethical). The chapter about families in our Turnbull text should have give you some ideas.
You will post your questions in the DB. I will review your questions and give advice if you need it. You should also review your fellow colleagues.
b. Conduct, audio-record, and transcribe the interview. This is the tricky one. You will record the interview and then transcribe it. The transcribed interview is only an appendix to the actual paper (see Requirement C). Some students in the past have been confused and just turned in the interview as the reflective paper. The transcribed appendix does not count toward the 5-page limit.
c. Write a 5-page reflective paper, relating pertinent quotes from your interviewee to your reading in the course, addressing legal, cultural, and ethical issues in special education as they relate to student learning differences. You will read through your transcribed interview and pick out themes that emerged in relation to the issues to be addressed. Using your own words, you will write about what kinds of experiences the interviewee has had. You will use your own words to synthesize the interviewee’s experiences into a cohesive paper. You will then use 4-10 short quotes from the transcript within the paper to support your synthesis. In other words, the synthesis should be comprised of primarily your writing with a few quotes from the subject woven into it.
have at least 4 references from our reading (using at least 2 sources.) Remember, references do not mean that you have to use direct quotes. If you use an idea from the authors, then you cite it.
